What is Google TV?
Google TV is the best part of TV, search, apps and the web, all rolled into one! It’s fantastic. The only problem you might have is knowing which to do first, or maybe dragging the kids off Facebook when you want to watch something else (you can do both at the same time, but it might be a bit difficult to concentrate)!
OK, let’s start at the beginning. Google, along with Sony, Intel and Logitech have been working together to develop a software and hardware platform which works side by side with your HDTV and set-top box, and is based on the operating system used for Android. Officially announced only in May 2010, it’s the most exciting thing to happen to TV since the remote control (remember when you had to stand up to change channels, if nobody could be bothered you’d just watch the same channel for the whole evening, they really had you, what a lazy bunch). Well, there’s none of that nonsense with Google TV, you can use your Android or Apple phone as a remote if you can’t be bothered to stand up and find the other one.
Features of Google TV
- You can instantly search for TV and Internet using one search bar
- Traditional programming is no problem with an HDMI cable from your Satellite Box or Cable
- Web browsing with Google Chrome
- Programs/applications for Netflix, YouTube, Video on Demand from Amazon, Twitter, Flickr, Napster, Picasa and Pandora
- Facility to transfer current activities between your TV and phone with Smart Phone Integration
- Apple or Android phone doubles up as a remote
- Other apps to be available from 2011 from Android developers.
So, if you want a TV that’s a computer, a computer that’s a TV which can all connect with your Smart Phone and means that you can do everything on the big screen from the comfort of your armchair, that’s Google TV.
